Food Availability: Risks, Resources and Responses

Sustainability in food production is an ongoing issue. Critical environmental, social, economic and technological challenges still exist as barriers to achieving food availability for all. This topic exploits the potential of new technologies to develop more productive, profitable and sustainable agri-food systems. Examples include matching crop varieties to the changing climate, maintaining soil heath, and developing new pest-resistant cropping systems.

Examples of the impact of our work in this area include:

  • Contributing to international assessments such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD) and the UK Climate Change Risk Assessment
  • Supporting sustainable agriculture, e.g. through plant science and crop trials around the world
  • Providing the UK Government with its Champion for Global Food Security
  • Working with breeders to develop crops for future climates
  • Developing diets fed to 40% of the UK pig population
